ZUNCKELS

Hamlet close to Bergville and Winterton. Once a Berlin Missionary Society station. Named in honour of Carl Zunckel, a missionary, who served at Emmaus from 1849-1896.
Emmaus Mission Church
Emmaus Mission Church, on the road to Cathedral Peak – Sir Theophilus Shepstone, Bantu Affairs in Natal invited Berlin Missionary Society to establish a mission station amongst the Amangwani people under Chief Zikhale. The first missionaries were Posselt and Guldenpfenning. A year later Rev C Zunckel followed.  Zunckel developed Emmaus into a centre for training Bantu evangelists. This was the second larger church built circa 1848. The mission station was declared a national Monument in 1959.
Mission Church Cemetery
Mission Church Cemetery- Graves of Carl Frederick Zunckel who died on 8 July 1899 and his wife who died on 16 February 1913. The cemetery also includes graves of the Zunckel children and some others.
Mission Church Hall
Mission Church Hall This was the first church built circa 1847. It now served as a hall and school.
