YZERFONTEIN
Also known as Ysterfontein – a fishing village. The name means iron fountain, referring to a spring in the ironstone formation there. The town started when the farm Yzerfontein was bought by the Katz family and established in 1937.
Lime kiln 1
Lime kiln 1 – R315 – north of road on the farm De La Rey. It was operative until 1963. It was built on which shells were layered with wood and fired for two days. In this way lime was extracted. It was used as a cement in the construction of buildings. Also used as a paint to whitewash walls by adding salt. One of only two remaining and declared a National Monument.
Lime kiln 2
Lime kiln 2 – R315 – South of the road on the farm Jacobus Kraal and built by an Abrahamse of Malmesbury. One of only two remaining and declared a National Monument.
