Winburg

It was laid out on the farm Waaifontein in 1842. It obtained municipal status in 1872. The name originally spelt “Wenburg” means ‘town of winning’. It may refer to a military victory of the Voortrekkers over the Matebele at Mosega near Zeerust on 17 January 1837, or to the triumph of the protagonists of Waaifontein as site of the town.
Voortrekker monument - Winburg
Voortrekker monument- This monument was erected in 1968. The five silos commemorate the five groups of Voortrekkers who settled in the area.
Dutch Reformed Church, Church Square
Dutch Reformed Church, Church Square – Designed by architects JH & AE Till and erected by builders Rundle, Rowe and Marshall. The cornerstone was laid by President MT Steyn, President of the Orange Free State on 20 January 1899. During the Anglo Boer war (1899-1902) the church at the time without a roof, was converted into a British hospital. Building was completed after the war. It was inaugurated on 18 March 1904. Declared a National Monument on 24 June 1983.
Dutch Reformed Church
Dutch Reformed Church Rietfontein, Pieter van der Werken St – the architect was Gerhard Moerdijk. The cornerstone was laid by Rev GNP Cloete on 16 May 1940. It was built due to a community split after the 1914 rebellion. Named after the farm Rietfontein, the birthplace of Pres MT Steyn. This building replaces the original which was built in 1917.

Concentration camp cemetery
Concentration camp cemetery – 2 km west of town – it commemorates the women and children who died in the concentration camp during the ABW 1899-1902. It also contains the graves of 200 British soldiers of the same war. Declared a national Monument on 7 March 1986.

Sand River Convention
Sand River Convention – 30 km north of town – here at this cairn the sovereign independence of the Transvaal (ZAR) was recognised on 16 January 1852 when the Sand River convention was signed by the British Assistant Commissioners, WS Hogge and CM Owen and the Boer General AWJ Pretorius. By this convention the existence of an independent Boer republic in the north was recognised by the British government. Declared a National Monument in 1958.

Town Hall, Andries Pretorius Square – The cornerstone was laid on 23 March 1938 by Dr JFJ van Rensburg, Administrator of the Free State. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site.
