WAVERLEY

It was laid out on 9 April 1903 on the farm Syferfontein. The name is said to be taken from the title of the first novel by Sir Walter Scott, “Waverley”.
Waverley House
Waverley House, 5 Murray St – This Victorian house was designed by the architect JA Cope-Christie and built in 1904 for Arthur E Page, owner of the Flower Foundation Clubs. The Pages lived there for 12 years. Bought by Mr and Mrs Tom Bertram, who lived there for 35 years and called their home “Ellengowan”, from one of Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels “Guy Mannering”. (The hero was Henry Bertram, son of the laird of Ellengowan).
St Mary’s School for Girls
 St Mary’s School for Girls, Athol & Burn St – started in Jeppe in 1888 and moving to this area in 1934 as an independent church school. The new buildings designed by Reid and Martin in 1938
