VOLKSRUST
Volksrust was laid out in 1888. The name was given because the Boers came to rest here after the battle of Majuba. It is lying on the border with Natal. It became a municipality in 1904.
British Garden of Remembrance
British Garden of Remembrance – just off Dan Pienaar Street – The monument was erected in remembrance to the British Soldiers who died in the surrounding districts.
Memorial on Voortrekker Square
Memorial on Voortrekker Square, cnr Joubert and Laingsnek Streets. Most of those who died in the town’s concentration camp during the ABW 1899-1902 were reinterred here. The memorial originally erected in the old cemetery was also erected on Voortrekker Square. This memorial commemorates the Burghers of the district who died during the war.Photo History
Memorial Wall
Memorial Wall – Extension to De Jager street. This wall was erected in the old cemetery in 1976. Some of the original tombstones of those who died in the concentration camp, were plastered in the wall.

Railway Station Buildings
Railway Station – Sarel Cilliers street – The station building was built in 1894. It was built by the NGR – Natal Government Railways according to NZASM specifications. This building is in a dilapidated state. The NZASM houses are still occupied. Some are built of stone and some of corrugated iron. These buildings were declared a National Monument.
FNB Building
FNB Building, Joubert Street – This sandstone building was previously The Natal Bank. The Natal Bank (1854 -1914) was taken over by The National Bank.
Convention Bridge
Convention Bridge - over the Border Spruit – The third Swaziland Convention was signed President Paul Kruger and Sir Henry Loch, the British High Commissioner in November 1894. This convention was to put Swaziland under administration. Both parties did not want to leave their territories. A railway coach was drawn on the bridge, each sitting on his own side of the border. Only the abutments of the bridge survived. This bridge was proclaimed a National Monument in 1954.
