VILLIERS – FREE STATE
Villiers was established on the farms Grootdraai and Pearson Valley in 1882, proclaimed by State President FW Reitz in 1891 and become a municipality in 1917. Named after the owner of the farms, Lourens B de Villiers. Once the transport stops for wagons to cross the Vaal River,
Bridge over Vaal River
Bridge over Vaal River – This single bridge was built of concrete and steel in 1928. Built at the same place where the wagons crossed the river.
Rail Bridge over Vaal River
Rail Bridge over Vaal River – this bridge was built circa 1925. This bridge is no longer use for the railways and only used as a pedestrian crossing. The railway station dated 1925 but is now in ruins
Post Office
Post Office – Pearsons Square – This sandstone building gable dated 1904.
Old Gaol
Old Gaol – Pearsons Square at the back of the Magistrate’s offices - this sandstone building is the oldest building in town. It was the only building not destroyed by the British during the 2nd ABW. One of the cells was accommodated by the late President Nelson Mandela after his arrest in Natal and on his way to Johannesburg.
Niki’s Stonehouse
Niki’s Stonehouse - Main St – This stone house is now a bed-and-breakfast establishment
Bank Building
Bank Building – Main St – this stone building was the branch for First National Bank. Now used as a diner.
Hotel
Hotel – Market Square – This stone building was a hotel and now used by other businesses.
