VENTERSBURG

It was laid out on the farm Kromfontein in 1872 and proclaimed in 1876. Named after the owner of then farm, Voortrekker PA Venter. It was the scene of fighting during the Basotho Wars of 1858 and 1865. Destroyed by the British during the Second ABW (1899-1902)
Dutch Reformed Church
Dutch Reformed Church, Steyn St – The cornerstone was laid by President MT Steyn on 12 June 1912. Re-laid in 1962. Consecrated on 18 July 1913. The architect was William Henry Ford. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site
Old Police Station complex
Old Police Station complex – Probably erected before 1914. Plans for the prison building were dated October 1898. The complex included stables and a pound. It reopened as a Police Museum on 20 October 1983. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site.
Skanskraal and Voortrekker grave (Farm Kromfontein
Skanskraal and Voortrekker grave (Farm Kromfontein – The kraal was erected in 1865, under the supervision of Field-Cornet PA Venter. About 200 Basotho, send by Moshesh, Venter’s friend, erected the stone walls. The kraal was used in 1856 and from 1866 to 1868. It also served as a defence point in the Basotho Wars. Declared a provincial Heritage Site.
Town Hall

Town Hall, Voortrekker St – The cornerstone of the building was laid on 27 June 1928 by ER Grobler, Administrator of the Free State. The architect was J Willoughby-Williams. The building contractor was HB Kruger. It was officially inaugurated on 8 December 1928. Declared a Provincial Heritage sit
