Sutherland

It was laid out in 1858 on the farm De List and attained municipality status in 1884. Named after Henry Sutherland. Minister of the DR Church at Worcester from 1824-1859. It is notorious as being the coldest place in SA with an average minimum temperature of -6C. The SA Astronomical Observatory is near the town. It is the primary observation site in SA, since the skies are usually clear and there is little pollution.
Dutch Reformed Church
Dutch Reformed Church – This church was designed by Charles Freeman and built in 1899. The congregation was founded in 1855. The British used the church as a base during the ABW 1899-1902. Grafitti done by the soldiers is still visible in the church. It was declared a National Monument. There is a stone cairn which commemorates NP van Wyk Louw for his contribution to Afrikaans in 1975. He and his brother WEG Louw (both writers) were from this town.
DR Church Hall
DR Church Hall – The cornerstone was laid by Rev BR Hattingh on 12 May 1906. It was declared a National Monument.

Stone Cairn
There is a stone cairn which commemorates NP van Wyk Louw for his contribution to Afrikaans in 1975. He and his brother WEG Louw (both writers) were from this town.
