SWARTRUGGENS
This town was laid out in 1875 on the farm Brakfontein. The name, Afrikaans for ‘black ridges’ refers to the colours of the forested black slate hills there. The town was formerly named in Dutch Zwartruggens.
Railway Station
• Railway Station – Built circa 1907. On 5 July 1907 the line from Krugersdorp to Zeerust was opened.

• Railway Station Master House – Next to the railway station.
• Memorial Siege of Elandsriver
• Memorial Siege of Elandsriver – Brakfontein – During 4 – 16 August 1900 a British supply post under Lt Col Charles Hore was under siege by the Boers under General JH de la Rey. This monument was ertected to commemorate the 1329 animals who died during the siege exposed to artillery and gun fire. The headstones of the British and the Boers who died during this event was removed from the cemetery to this premises. Unveiled on 15 August 2000.
• Dutch Reformed Church
• Dutch Reformed Church, (Nederduits Herformde Kerk) Pretorius St – Designed by Wynand Louw and erected in 1921. The cornerstone was laid by Rev JD Roos on 23 April 1923.
