ST HELENA BAY

Derived from the Portuguese name ‘Bahia da Santa Elena bestowed by Vasco da Gama on 7 on 7 November 1497.

Vasco da Gama monument – This monument commemorates the fifth century of the birth of the seafarer Vasco Da Gama of Portugal. This site was where he put foot on shore.  This padrao was presented to South Africa to be erected on the same day that in the year 1497 the fleet under the command of the great captain arrived here after sailing for three months and one day navigating by the stars along an entirely new route from the island of Santiago in the Cape Verde group a route made it possible to link the west and the East by sea. Thus, opening up a new era. St Helena Bay 8 November 1969.
