PORT SHEPSTONE
It was laid out at the mouth of the Mzimkulu river in 1867 and became a township in 1913 and a municipality in 1934. Named after Sir Theophilus Shepstone, Secretary for Native Affairs from 1856 and Administrator of Zululand from 1884.
Harbour wall
A Harbour wall was built in the river and the first ship sailed into the harbour on 8 May 1880 and used until about 1901.
Light House
Light House, Princess Elizabeth Drive - 1905 – This prefabricated cast-iron lighthouse was dismantled in Scottsburgh and re-erected here. Declared a National Monument in 1995.
Dick King Memorial
Dick King Memorial, Cnr Memorial and Berea str – This memorial commemorates the ride of Dick King from Port Natal to Grahamstown from 26 May to 4 June 1842, a distance of about 1000 km in 10 days on horseback. This was to request help for the besieged British garrison in Natal by the Voortrekkers. This memorial was unveiled by G Heaton Nicholls, Administrator of Natal on 31st May 1944 on behalf of the Sons of England.
Whaleback Cottage
Whaleback Cottage Milton Lane, was built in 1916. The first holiday home built in Ramsgate. named after Whaleback Rock, a giant rock in front of the cottage. Alan Paton completed his book "Cry the Beloved Country" here in 1948.
