PATERNOSTER

Fishing village on the west coast at Cape Columbine. The name Latin for ‘Our Father’, is derived from the first two words of the Lord’s Prayer, said by Catholic Portuguese seamen when shipwrecked. The name asppears as St Matin’s Paternoster on old maps. Paternoster is also derived from a particular type of fishing tackle.
St Augustine’s Church
St Augustine’s Church -possibly built in 1888. A centenary stone was laid by the RT Rev Edward Mackenzie on 28 August 1988 to commemorate the centenary 1888-1988.
Cape Columbine lighthouse
Cape Columbine lighthouse – built in 1936. The first light was set in motion by Mrs HC Cooper on 1 October 1936. It was built on a rock named as Castle Rock. Part of the light were also a fog signal and a radio beacon. This was the first lens system on the SA coast which had been designed for use with an incandescent electric lamp.
