PAARLSHOOP/LANGLAAGTE

Paarlshoop was laid out in 1886 on the farm Langlaagte and proclaimed in 1938. Designated after the Paarl-Pretoria Gold Mine Company formed by the rev SJ du Toit and others from Paarl.
George Harrison Park
Outcrop of Main Group of Conglomerates, Main Reef Rd – Also known as the George Harrison Park - This was the outcrop discovered in1886 by George Harrison and George Walker This started the gold rush and the beginning of Johannesburg.
Langlaagte Deep Village
Langlaagte Deep Village, Crownwood rd, Crown Mines – This village was built in 1902 to house miners of Langlaagte Deep. The site was declared a National Monument in 1989.
NG Church Langlaagte
NG Church Langlaagte, Marais Street – Built in 1899. The building was consecrated in 1902, the delay caused by the ABW. The church started by Abraham Kriel, the founder of the orphanage with the same name. His and his wife’s graves are located in the church yard.
Site of the shooting of General Koos De La Rey
Site of the shooting of General Koos De La Rey, Langlaagte Railway Station, Deville st – 1914. He was shot by the police when the vehicle they were travelling in did not stop at a roadblock. The police were on the lookout for the notorious Foster Gang.
