Luneburg was established in 1870 by the Hermannsburg Mission Society. It was named after the Luneburg in Germany.

Cemetery
Cemetery – this cemetery also contains the graves of 44 British soldiers who died in an attack by Zulu warriors on 12 March 1879 at Ntombe drift. A settlers’ monument is erected in front of the cemetery.
Monument, road between Luneburg and Braunschweig – this memorial commemorates the young men Heinrich Filter and Larsen who died in a skirmish with Zulu warriors in 1879.
