KOMATIPOORT
The town is at the confluence of the Komati and Crocodile rivers. Named after the gorge (Afrikaans poort) which the Komati River cut through the Lebombo Mountains. Komati is of Swazi origin and means ‘river of cows’. (Hippopotamus)
Komati River rail bridge
Komati River rail bridge – the first bridge built by the NZASM. The stones for the abutments and piers were imported from Belgium in the form of dressed stone. The last stone was laid by Vice-President of the ZAR, General NJ Smit on 29 October 1890. The contractor was Van Hattum & Co. The first locomotive crossed the Komati Bridge on 14 May 1891.
Old Cemetery
Old Cemetery – located on the golf course – Established circa 1888. Many workers on the NZASM railway line died in the unhealthy climate of malaria, of whom two NZASM engineers , JE van Ysendyk and GH van der Meulen from the Netherlands.
Railway Bridge Crocodile River
Railway Bridge Crocodile River – This bridge served the Selati line which ran through the Kruger National Park to Soekmekaar. This part of the line was built in 1893. The line was only finished in 1912. Ended in 1972. Part of the bridge was damaged in a flood in 2000. A section of the bridge was retained and used as a water pumping station
