Founded in 1852 on the farm Langkuil. It became a municipality in 1914.Named after two people who laid it out, Major William Hope, auditor-General and a Mr Field. Originally known as Zoute River (the name of the river running through the town).
Dutch Reformed Church
Dutch Reformed Church – dedicated in 1879. The congregation was formed in1851. It was enlarged and altered by Hesse & Son in 1911. The organ was imported from Hull in England. Two graves are in front in corner. It commemorates ministers in the congregation, ie. Rev Neethhling who died in 1917. He served from 1854 – 1905. Rev Fourie who died in 1957. He served from 1943-1957.

Replica Hartebieshuis
Replica Hartebieshuis – replica of houses built by the nomadic pioneer farmers who moved to get grazing for their livestock. Fourteen of these houses were in the district until 1985.
