  • ABW – Anglo Boer War
  • ZAR – Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek – after annexation called Transvaal -
  • NZASM – Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg Maatskappij
  • NG Kerk – Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk – Dutch Reformed Church
  • IMR – Imperial Military Railways
  • NGR – Natal Government Railways
  • MOTH club – Memorable Order of Tin Hats
  • Transvaal – Province now broken up in parts – Gauteng, Northwest Province, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
  • Sytze Wopkes Wierda (1839-1911) –born in the Netherlands- Dutch Engineer and Architect of the ZAR.  He started employment for the ZAR in November 1887 in the Department of public Works. He was involved in many Government buildings and bridges.
  • Gerard Leendert Pieter Moerdijk (1890-1958) – Also known as Gerard Moerdyk - Architect Best known for designing the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria and various churches
  • Sir Herbert Baker (1862-1946) – English Architect – best known for designing the Union Buildings and various houses and public buildings – left south Africa for India
  • President Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger (1825-1904)– better known as Paul Kruger - President of the ZAR
