GRIEKWASTAD
Originally the station Klaarwater of the London Missionary Society, founded in 1802. It was renamed Griquatown in 1813 by Revd Johan Campbell (1766-1840), missionary of the London Missionary Society. A town developed, becoming a municipality in 1910. It was named after the Griqua, a Khoikhoi people who lived there. Griekwastad is preferred for official purposes. This was the former capital of the Griquas. Hometown of the Griqua leaders Adam Kok and Andries Waterboer.
Mary Moffat Museum
• Mary Moffat Museum, Main st – Erected circa 1828, the birthplace of Mary Moffat, daughter of the missionary Robert Moffat. She was married to David Livingstone. A pulpit made of packing cases and local timber. The pulpit was used by Moffat, Waterboer and Livingstone. The pulpit and building were both proclaimed National Monuments. The pulpit was proclaimed on 17 April 1936.
Old residency
• Old residency, Main st – This was the old residence of the magistrate. Possibly erected by convicts from Kimberley in circa 1880. The first resident was JJ Christie. Proclaimed a Provincial Heritage site.
Post Office and Magistrate’s Court
• Post Office and Magistrate’s Court, Main St – Erected circa 1880. Currently used as a magistrate court, post office and other civic offices. Proclaimed a heritage site.
Voortrekker Monument
• Voortrekker Monument, Main Rd & Voortekker st – Erected in 1938, the Voortrekker monument commemorates the centenary of the Voortrekkers.
Waterboer monument
• Waterboer monument – R325 (Moffat rd) near hospital – a memorial dedicated to Andries Waterboer, Griqua Captain from 1820 to 1852. This is the grave site of Andries Waterboer. The two cannons originally known as “old Niklaas” and “old Grietjie” (named after Niklaas Waterboer and his wife), were given to the Griquas by the British Government.

• Old DR Church – the cornerstone was laid by Rev CM Oosthuizen on 26 November 1949. Not in use and dilapidated.
