Clarens

Clarens was laid out in 1912. It was named after Clarens in Switzerland where President Paul Kruger died in exile.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Golden Gate Highlands National Park - the name is derived from the sandstone bluffs which look golden at sunset. The park was proclaimed in September 1963.
Primary School
Primary School, Malherbe St – The school was inaugurated on 2 September 1914 with 42 children on the roll. The first principal was Mr JS de Leeuw from 1914 to 1944. Now used as the administration offices.

Lesotho Highlands water project
Lesotho Highlands Water Project – It commemorates the construction of delivery tunnels on the North Lesotho Highlands water project 1991-1996. The network of tunnels divert water from the mountains of Lesotho to South Africa.
Naauwpoort Monument
Naauwpoort Monument - Town Square – this monument commemorates the battle of Naauwpoort on 29 Sept 1865. A narrow kloof now on the R711 through the Rooiberg. This was a battle between The Transvaal Commando together with the Free State against the Basotho’s. 5 of the burghers died. The monument was unveiled on 16 December 1895 at Ararat by Commandant HJ Bruwer. Re-erected in 1962 on the Market Squ

Methodist Church – The cornerstone of this church was laid by Emma Walker on 3rd August 1936.
Old Kliphuis
Old Kliphuis, Main st - This dorpshuisie was built circa 1927. Served as a gathering place for farmers during nagmaal and church.Methodist Church – The cornerstone of this church was laid by Emma Walker on 3rd August 1936.
Lake Clarens Guest house
Lake Clarens Guest house. Lake Clarens Drive – This house was built circa 1912. Presumably it was the postmaster’s house with workshops at the back. The upper story was added around 2000.
Clarence Farmhouse
Clarence Farmhouse – situated on premises of Kiara Lodge, on rd between Clarens and Golden Gate – Built circa 1882, one of the homesteads in the region that came unscathed out of the Boer War. Since then was used as a post office, club house and a residence.
San Rock Paintings
San Rock Paintings Dassie shelter, walking trail at Kiara Lodge – Presumably the only San paintings which depicts a dassie
Titanic Rock
Titanic Rock, just outside town on Bethlehem Rd – the rock resembles the bow of the tragic ship Titanic.
Public Convenience Building
Public Convenience Building – This sandstone building is currently use for trade.
