Cape at the southernmost tip of Africa. It is officially the meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The name is derived of Potuguese and means ‘needle’, probably given because the needle of the compass showed no magnetic deviation there but pointed due north. Other names encountered were Cape of Compasses. Needles of the Compass, the Needles, Cabo das Agullas and Ponto da Sao Brandao.
