CAPE AGULHAS
Cape at the southernmost tip of Africa. It is officially the meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The name is derived of Potuguese and means ‘needle’, probably given because the needle of the compass showed no magnetic deviation there but pointed due north. Other names encountered were Cape of Compasses. Needles of the Compass, the Needles, Cabo das Agullas and Ponto da Sao Brandao.
Cape Agulhas lighthouse
Cape Agulhas lighthouse – It is the most southern tip of Africa. Built in Egyptian style on the farm Zoetendals Vlei belonging to Michiel van Breda. It was Initiated by Colonel CC Michell, surveyor-general and engineer of the Cape Colonial government in 1837. It was completed on 15 December 1848. The light was lit on 1 March 1849. The tower is flanked by the living quarters. It was declared a National Monument on 2nd March 1973.
