BETHLEHEM

Established on the farm Pretoriuskloof in 1860. Proclaimed in 1884. Named after the biblical town on the same name. ‘House of bread’ so called because wheat was found to thrive there.
Dutch Reformed Church
Dutch Reformed Church, Church St – The cornerstone was laid by President MT Steyn on 12 April 1910. Designed by Rev JD Kestell. Inaugurated on 18 February 1911. Declared a National Monument on 4 June 1981.
Basuto War Memorial
Basuto War Memorial – On premises DR Church – Erected in memory of two Europeans and one Hottentot who died during the attack in Basuto War (1865-1866). Part of declared National Monument on 4 June 1982.Photo Descripsion
Townhouse
Townhouse, 12 Church St – Now Wooden Spoon Guesthouse – The oldest existing building in town. This Tuishuisie was used as a nagmaal house. Presumably built by Johannes Hendrik Blignaut, who took transfer of the property on 24 October 1874. Declared a National Monument on 15 july 1983.
Jonge  hall
Jonge  hall, Church St – The cornerstone was laid by by Mrs ASE Venter ( Prinsloo) on 21 November 1925.
James T Strapp’s Shop
James T Strapp’s Shop, 18 Church St -   Declared a National Monument on 4 December 1981
St Augustine’s Anglican Church
St Augustine’s Anglican Church, 34 Louw St – Designed by architect CJC Bernhard and constructed by WE Barker. The cornerstone was laid by Pavline Croisilles Belbin on 29 February 1928. The church was completed on 26 August 1928.
Old Magistrate’s Offices
Old Magistrate’s Offices, Louw St – The cornerstone was laid by President FW Reitz on 26 January 1893. Declared a National Monument on 10 June 1983. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site.
Bethlehem Cluba
Bethlehem Club - Gable dated 1915. In portal a memory stone for private John Laing, a Stewart of this club for a period of 6 years who died of wounds on 17 April 1918 whilst a POW in Germany.
Methodist Church
Methodist Church, Cnr President Boshoff and High St
Town Hall
Town Hall, Muller St – The cornerstone was laid by Councillor Percy Goble and the Administrator of the Orange Free State, CTM Wilcocks on 30 January 1930. Built by John J Peddie. Designed by FW Massey. Declared a National Monument.
Wagon House and loft
Wagon House and loft, Cnr Muller and Landdros St – Erected in 1894 by AA Baartman, builder of wagons, carts and spiders. The outbuildings were added after the ABW. Declared a National Monument on 10 June 1983
Old Dutch Reformed Mission Church
Old Dutch Reformed Mission Church, - the cornerstone was laid on2 December 1906 and taken into use in 1909. Now used as a museum. Declared a National Monument on 27 August 1982.
St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 144 Cambridge St – the cornerstone was laid on 11 June 1913 by SJ Strapp. Consecrated on 28 September 1913 by Rev James McRobert.
Sandstone House
Sandstone House – President Boshoff St - The house has still some pressed ceilings and Oregon pine wooden floors. Now used as offices for a short-term insurance.
Old Mission House
ld Mission House, President Boshoff St – first missionary of the DR Church in Bethlehem. The house was enlarged in 1903. Now housing the Traffic office’s ??

Dutch Reformed Church Bethlehem- West, Church st – the cornerstone was laid by Rev JC du Plessis on 26 April 1930. Designed by HJ Louw,
Railway Station
Railway Station, just off Cambridge St – Designed by David Aitken McCubbin No longer in use and in poor condition. The railway line from Harrismith reached Bethlehem on 1 March 1905. The line from here to Kroonstad was completed in 1906
Townhouse
Townhouse, 14 President Burger St – This Tuishuisie was erected just after the ABW (1899-1902). Declared a National Monument on 31 December 1981.
The Seminary
The Seminary, Wessels St – Erected in 1894 by the DR Church to house the girls’ school known as the Seminary. Since 1903 used as a girls’ hostel for government school.  Declared a National Monument on 12 April 1985.
Bethlehem Technical College
Bethlehem Technical College, Wessels St – Evolved from the Spinning and Weaving School. The present building was erected in 1914 and was named Huishoudskool. The building was declared a National Monument.
Cemetery, Lomond Rd
Cemetery, Lomond Rd – old cemetery. Included grave of a John Andrews who was murdered on 21 August 1865 during the Basuto War. Another grave for a WH White who died on 30 June 1869.
