Mission station of the Hermannsburg Missionary Society. Established in 1864 of biblical origin. The name is Hebrew for ‘house of sorrow or misery’. Bethanie was known as Losperfontein, a farm owned by Tjaart Kruger, President Paul Kruger’s younger brother. The community purchased the farm around 1866, renaming it Bethanie. The town is home to the Bakwena ba Mogopa traditional community
